About the team


The Safety, Environment and Regulation (SER) division upholds safety and sustainability in our transport system. We’re working to deliver globally recognised, safe, sustainable transport for our people, customers and the community.


The Transport Safety branch within SER has the Centre for Maritime Safety - Strategy & Policy team. This team is responsible for developing policy, strategies, programs, projects, and campaigns for promoting and improving Maritime Safety, Maritime Infrastructure and Sustainable Boating outcomes.


The opportunity


We have a permanent opportunity for an Assistant Policy Officer to join our Centre for Maritime Safety - Strategy and Policy team based in Sydney. The role is responsible for undertaking a range of research, analysis, and administrative activities to support the development of policies and programs that deliver maritime safety and maritime infrastructure outcomes as outlined in the Maritime Safety Plan and the Maritime Infrastructure Plan.


The primary responsibilities of the role are:


  • Assist the team in the delivery of a range of policy related projects and initiatives to facilitate the timely delivery of policy objectives.
  • Undertake basic research and analysis in assigned areas and contribute to the preparation of reports to inform decision-making and contribute to policy and program development.
  • Contribute to the preparation of draft correspondence, briefing notes, discussion papers and other documents to support the development of policy initiatives.
  • Provide a range of administrative activities, including coordinating working group meetings and taking of minutes, to support stakeholder engagement as well as policy and program development and implementation.
  • Respond to routine policy queries to provide consistent and accurate advice.


About you


Your strong communication skills both written and verbal are essential for this role, and ideally previous experience in a role where you have been involved in writing for a variety of audiences and/or in a government environment would be highly desirable.


You should be a self-starter who is a team player, who can also work autonomously, with the ability to manage conflicting agendas and work to deadlines on a range of different tasks concurrently.


Your high attention to detail, research and analytical skills will assist you in supporting projects and preparing various papers whether they are briefing notes, correspondence, or meeting agenda papers.


As you will be supporting the strategy and policy team including managers and advisors you will be highly organised with good administrative skills, attention to detail and a high level of proficiency with standard Microsoft Office applications.


Knowledge of the Maritime Safety Plan 2026 and/or the Maritime Infrastructure Plan would be a bonus!


Salary and Benefits


The salary for this position is Transport Grade 5 ($87,256 - $95,984) per annum plus superannuation and leave loading.
